Curriculum Overview

Our curriculum is not only designed to inspire curiosity and a genuine love for learning but also to deliver exceptional academic outcomes. We are proud of our students’ achievements and the proven track record of success that our broad and challenging curriculum provides. Our goal is to ensure that every student leaves us well-prepared and equipped for whatever future pathway they choose, whether it’s further education, a vocational career, or the world of work.
Our diverse curriculum challenges students to excel. It is designed to cultivate the knowledge, skills and instil the confidence needed to navigate a successful life. We place a strong emphasis on academic excellence, while also providing a large range of co-curricular enrichment opportunities that allow learners to develop their unique interests and passions.
This approach has led to outstanding results, which exceed the national average for both GCSE and A-level. These results are a testament to our students’ hard work and the quality of teaching they receive.
Key Stage 3 (Years 7-9)
Students follow the National Curriculum and learn in set or mixed ability groups, ensuring they are both challenged and supported appropriately. This strong foundation prepares them for the next stage of their education. In Year 9, students continue with a broad and balanced Key Stage 3 curriculum and also select a Leadership and Challenge pathway, giving them opportunities to develop valuable life skills through programmes such as the Duke of Edinburgh Award, Combined Cadet Force, or qualifications like Rookie Lifeguard and Sports Leaders. In addition, students in the top six maths sets begin studying GCSE Statistics in Year 9.
All students follow a comprehensive tutor programme that covers a full range of personal, social, health, economic and careers education, including employability skills, British Values, relationships and sex education (RSE), and health education. Our personal development curriculum is carefully planned to reflect the needs of our local community. Reading is taught across all year groups through tutor sessions and the main curriculum, with departments delivering Reading Mastery to help students think deeply about reading at different stages of the process. Students working below their chronological reading age are identified through assessment and receive targeted reading intervention.

Key Stage 4 (GCSE Years 10-11)
All students follow a comprehensive two-year program leading to GCSE examinations or other recognised accreditations. In addition to a core curriculum that includes English, Maths and Science, students can personalise their learning by choosing from an array of additional GCSE and vocational qualifications, including Drama, Art, Music, 3D Design, Statistics, Media and Photography.
To prepare them for life beyond Bulmershe, we offer a work placement for all students in Years 10 and 12, providing valuable real-world experience. This balanced approach ensures our students not only achieve their full academic potential but are also ready for the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead.
Based on our local context, Maths is a highly important qualification, so we enter students in the top six sets for GCSE Statistics at the end of Year 10. This provides additional challenge, strengthens their mathematical understanding, and supports progression onto A level maths.
